Sons of Svante Magnus Swenson, founder of the historic Swenson Ranch, persuaded officials with the Texas Central Railroad to pass a route through their ranch. The family donated land for a town site, which railroad president H. McHarg named Stamford in 1900 after his hometown in Connecticut. Early employers after the turn of the century were a flour mill, cottonseed oil plant, an iron foundry, gins, brick manufactures and a railroad roundhouse. Stamford has gain national fame for the Texas Cowboy
Reunion Rodeo, first organized in 1930 to preserve the cowboy traditions of the Southwest cattle
empires. The reunion often is called the “World’s Largest Amateur Rodeo,” drawing 500- plus contestants and thousands of spectators.
