2007 Est. Pop.: 1,645.
Location: About 6 miles southeast of Abilene’s city limits in the area of FM 1750. The U.S. Census Bureau labels Potosi as a census-designated place, which means it is a closely settled, named, unincorporated community.
History: When applying for a post office, R.A. Pollard named Potosi in 1893 after a town in Mexico. The Pollard family originally settled the area in the 1870s. A Southern Methodist church that was built in 1880 and rebuilt after a fire in 1884 served as the first school from 1891 to 1897.
In 1914 Potosi included a cotton gin, a couple of churches and a handful of businesses. By the 1950s, its population had dropped below 100. The development of several new neighborhoods that began in the late 1980s and continues today has led to a population boom.

The 17-member group includes two paramedics and three emergency medical technicians. In 2007, the Potosi VFD responded to 189 calls, compared to 65 in 2002.
